Subject: It takes a great deal of history...
Dear Mr. Duncan,
I was going through some old Dr. Dobbs when I found this review you'd done of books on computing history (It Takes a Great Deal Of History To Produce a Little Literature, DDJ, March 1992). This is one area in which I too have always been ready to poke my nose. I wonder if I could interest you in another wonderful book on the same area? It's called "The Dream Machine," and it's based on a serial-documentary produced by BBC on the history of computers. In fact the serial is being shown right now on "BBC WORLD" as part of their Computer Week special.
I found the book a pleasant read written in a smooth narrative style. They start off right from the abacus and go on till around 1990s. Though they are a bit partial to Alan Turing and Artificial Intelligence, the book if chock full of facts and stories. Another feature which I really liked was the annotated Bibliography, it's broken up chapter-wise, which leads you on to more great books. They have a great chapter on the developments that led to the transistor. Do try this book out.
Another interesting book could be the new release by ACM Books "Portraits in Computing," it's an album of specially commissioned photographs of Computing Pioneers.
Cheers,
Sujith
Thanks for the tips. I saw some of the original photographs that are included in Portraits in Computing at the recent ACM 50th Anniversary Conference in San Jose -- they were terrific!

Subject: wholesale distributors
I just discovered ERCB, and I am delighted with your web page. I noticed that you have links to publishers, authors, bookstores, agents, etc. I would like to suggest that you add a link to wholesalers too.
We are new to the internet, but we have been wholesaling for almost twenty-five years. We do not sell to individual retail customers. We sell to government agencies (local, state & federal), to schools and libraries (public & private) and to businesses and organizations. We specialize in computor books.
I would be happy to provide you with a membership listing for the American Wholesale Booksellers Association.
Thanks for your consideration.
Harvey D. Eluto
We would be very happy to post a list of book wholesalers on ERCB.
